THE “universal ancestor” that gave rise to all life couldn’t take the heat, according to French researchers. Many biologists believe that life originated in near-boiling waters around volcanic vents. But to be stable at these temperatures, RNA molecules must form strong bonds, which means that more than 60 per cent of the RNA must be made of the bases guanine and cytosine.
